General World-Building

Spoilers Ahead!

Here's a bunch of words that describe the world:
Post apocalyptic, Wasted, Harsh, Polluted, Dangerous, Full of Secrets, Mysterious, Arid, Siberia, European, Loud, frontier, Spaghetti Western, greasy, rugged, Industrial, Awe inducing. Diesel powered, forgotten lore, Giant Beasts, Pirates, Harpoon

Thoughts on the landscape:
RailSea is a post apocalyptic world. The entire landscape is shaped by an environmental disaster (the god squabble). The run away competition of railway companies covered the land in railways, filled with sky with toxic clouds such that the blue sky can rarely be seen (and is inhabited by enormous mutants). The ground is inhabited by giant flesh eating mutants, and cities can only be built on rocky plateaus.

I think the obvious choice for setting would be the American West. The idea of competeing capitalist companies racing to build rail roads is very reminiscent of the westward expansion. I think that might be a bit too obvious though. I want to steer away from grand canyon style canyons and obvious Amercana. I really like some of the colder feeling images. Many deserts, like the Gobi  are in cooler climates and have cooler color palettes.
